During 2002, there were 14,312 total arrests (all ages) for marijuana in Virginia. This is up slightly from 2001, when there were 14,248 marijuana arrests. During 2000, there were 13,559 marijuana arrests in Virginia. During 2002, the Virginia State Police Pharmaceutical Drug Diversion Unit received 744 complaints of diversion activities throughout Virginia. In response to the complaints, 399 investigations were initiated and 213 persons were arrested on 478 charges. Nine of the individuals arrested were licensed health care providers. Overcrowding in prison systems is largely due to drug-related crime, but most drug users in Virginia should have the opportunity to enter a drug rehab center.
