The Need for Drug Rehabs in New Hampshire
While powder cocaine is readily available throughout New Hampshire, crack is primarily available in the state’s urban areas such as Rochester, Manchester, and Portsmouth.
There has been an increase in heroin availability along the seacoast and in the southeast region of the state. This substance has emerged as the most significant drug threat to New Hampshire. High purity, low cost heroin is attracting a new user population: young adults who snort or smoke the drug instead of inject it.
Marijuana is the most readily available and widely abused illegal drug in New Hampshire. Most of the marijuana available in the state originates in Mexico. However, BC Bud from Canada and locally-produced marijuana are also available. THC content in excess of 22% has been found in the area.
There has been a growth in the availability of methamphetamine in the state, particularly in and around the seacoast area.
Club Drugs - There has been a rapid increase in the availability of MDMA in New Hampshire, particularly among students and in association with the rave scene.
Other Drugs - The diversion and abuse of pharmaceutical drugs, particularly OxyContin and methylphenidate hydrochloride (Ritalin), pose significant and increasing threats to New Hampshire. Vicodin and Percocet are also diverted and abused in the state.
There are approximately 5,000 annual admissions to drug rehab and addiction treatment facilities in New Hampshire, however, due to the high relapse rate of many traditional programs most families are searching for something that works.
