Crack Information

What is crack?

The chemical cocaine hydrochloride is commonly known as cocaine. Some users chemically process cocaine in order to remove the hydrochloride. This process is called "freebasing" and makes the drug more potent. "Crack" is a solid form of freebased cocaine. It is called "crack" because it snaps and cracks when heated and smoked. Crack is the most addictive of all street drugs and the most devestating to users and their loved ones. National Drug Rehab Treatment Centers is a free service that will help you find a drug rehab for any alcohol or drug addiction problem you or a loved one may be having. It is easy to confuse the different terms used in this field, describing the different types of drug rehab centers, drug rehabilitation centers, and substance abuse treatment programs. For the problem that you are addressing, should you be looking for an Outpatient, In-patient, Residential Treatment Center, Long term or Short term treatment and what modality of treatment is the most effective and what are the cost related to these forms of treatment or rehab?

Extent of Crack Use:

According to the 2006 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), approximately 8.6 million Americans aged 12 or older reported trying crack cocaine at least once during their lifetimes, representing 3.5% of the population aged 12 or older. Additional 2006 NSDUH data indicate that approximately 1.5 million (0.6%) reported past year crack cocaine use and 702,000 (0.3%) reported past month crack cocaine use.

The 2006 NSDUH results also indicate that there were 245,000 persons aged 12 or older who had used crack cocaine for the first time within the past 12 months.

Results of the 2007 Monitoring the Future survey indicate that 2.1% of eighth graders, 2.3% of tenth graders, and 3.2% of twelfth graders reported lifetime use of crack cocaine. In 2006, these percentages were 2.3%, 2.2%, and 3.5%, respectively.

According to data from the Arrestee Drug Abuse Monitoring (ADAM) Program, a median of 30.1% of adult male arrestees and 35.3% of adult female arrestees tested positive for cocaine (all varieties) at arrest in 2003. The adult male samples were compiled from 39 U.S. sites and the adult female samples were compiled from 25 sites. A median of 17.2% of adult male arrestees and 24.5% of adult female arrestees reported using crack cocaine at least once in the year before being arrested. What's new about crack?

Since crack is an already prepared form of freebased cocaine, the user does not have to buy the equipment or be exposed to the explosive chemicals associated with freebasing. Crack is most often packaged in vials or plastic bags and sold in small quantities, usually 300-500mg or enough for two to three inhalations.

Traditionally, cocaine was a rich man's drug, due to the large expense of a cocaine habit. Now, crack is being sold at prices low enough that even adolescents can afford to buy it. But, this is misleading, since once a person is addicted to cocaine, his "habit" often increases, and so does his expense.

What are crack's adverse effects?

As with any street drug, what is sold may not be what it is claimed to be. Predicting side effects is difficult when the actual contents are not known. Life-threatening reactions have been reported whether it's the first, the 100th, or any other time crack is used. You do not have to overdose on crack to die from it.

In addition, if the initial experience leads to continued use, other adverse effects include the rapid development of tolerance, addiction, and all the social problems that can come from an expensive drug habit.
Regardless of dosage, these reactions may appear:

Convulsions Increased Heart Rate
Heart Attack Abnormal Heart Beat
Sudden, sharp blood pressure increase Stroke
Extreme Depression Suicidal Behavior

How is crack used?

The same way that freebase is used, namely, by placing the substance in a glass pipe (or hash pipe) with a fine mesh screen under it, then heating it and inhaling the vapors. The vapors of the freebase are absorbed through the lungs into the bloodstream and transported to the brain within 10-15 seconds. One inhalation will produce a degree of intoxication usually lasting 10-15 minutes.

Drug Rehab Center's Reputation

If you are searching for a drug rehab, there are a few vital factors that one should keep in mind before making a final decision. First of all, you need to realize that less than fifty years ago drug rehab did not exist in any form except through psychiatric treatment. Since that time we have experienced a proliferation of drug rehab centers in the United States . The rise in attention for drug rehab centers came from an addicted pubic that had dramatically increased in the numbers of persons that needed help, but the more important cause for the rapid increase in the establishment of drug rehab centers came mostly because there was money to pay for drug rehab. Most of these funds came from private health insurance companies that had included a provision for drug rehab in a overwhelming majority of their major health plans. However, drug rehab centers were established before there was any sound science to deliver a clinical technology that would actually handle addiction in a successful manner and drug rehab’s reputation has suffered ever since.

These early drug rehab centers were basing their treatment on the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, which was a successful approach to helping alcoholics recover from their addictions, but was not ever intended to be an institutionalized form of treatment and by altering its basic tenants, these drug rehab centers did not deliver the outcomes that one would expect if they were seeking a cure to their addiction. For about twenty years, this didn’t seem to matter since drug rehabilitation was finding clients and making money.

In looking for a crack cocaine drug rehab or addiction treatment center, a person should be looking for a treatment setting that utilizes a regime of detox that will remove the crack cocaine from the body. This drug is so highly toxic and fat soluable that crack users will feel the effects of crack being leached from the fat tissue of their bodies for years after they have ceased using the drug. The usual patteren for someone on crack cocaine is to go on binges for as long as their funds will allow or usually somewhere in the area of 48 hours, at which time the paranoia becomes so extreme that continued use is unpleasant. After crashing for 24 hours or more, the crack user will awake and swear off the use of crack, but after a few days, he will find himself back on the streets buying more crack cocaine.

Crack Cocaine use/abuse is much like that of crystal meth in this regard. Crack cocaine users that have young children are many times putting the children at risk because they will "crash" into such a deep sleep that the kids can't awake them. Stop for a minute and picture in your mind a child in this family and you can't help but feel the pain in these families. Anyone using crack cocaine or any loved ones or friends that you know that have this addiction should become your responsibility to ensure that they get immediate help. Many times it is recommended to have crack cocaine users arrested or reported to children's protective services if they refuse to get help. The families using this drug as well as those using crystal meth are so very dangerous to themselves, the children and even their community, that it is the ethical action to do whatever it takes to stop their destructive behaviors....Think of the children and you will have no choice! Call 877-444-1137 and National drug rehab and treatment centers staff will help you in any ways we can.
